Summer Beach Sessions

NSVL’s 2011 junior beach sessions have been a huge success, with Rookies, parents and teachers all getting involved.  We were lucky enough to have some great weather for our weekends on the beach, and a range of sea conditions meant the Rookies and Lifesaving classes were given the chance to practise their skills in different situations. The main message throughout the sessions was how to stay safe, both on the beach in general and when performing rescues.

The groups built upon their skills learned in the pool, learning how to stay safe in the sea, performing rescues and taking part in stimulated incidents.  As well as learning how to use everyday beach items such as balls, sticks and clothes to perform safe rescues, the groups were also given the chance to practise with equipment used by lifeguards, such as torpedo buoys, throw bags and rescue boards.  The Rookies achieved RLSS awards in communication, paddle board and beach safety, and the lifesaving classes completed their Bronze and Silver Cross awards.

It was fantastic to see lots of parents getting involved, coming in for a swim and having a go on NSVL’s rescue boards and kayaks. The Rookies have also taken part in visits to Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) and Tynemouth and Cullercoats Lifeboat station.  At Cullercoats the group had a great time dressing up as lifeboat crew, trying on dry suits, helmets and lifejackets.  The crew also gave us a tour of the boathouse and showed us all of their lifesaving equipment, explaining when and how it would be used.

We visited TVLB at their base in Tynemouth, where Brigade members demonstrated and let us try out some of the equipment that they carry in their Coastguard vehicle.  We were also shown round the Watchhouse museum, which is full of pictures, artefacts and history surrounding our coast. Congratulations to all the young lifesavers who achieved awards.  A massive thanks to all of the teachers and parents who helped out, and of course to TVLB, Cullercoats RNLI and Tynemouth RNLI for providing such fun and interesting sessions.
