August Newsletter

We hope everyone is enjoying the break and is looking forward to the start of the new term.  Please find the latest club newsletter below, which includes some important information and reminders for the September.

Good news

Last term saw plenty of success and achievement for the club.  The last pool session saw the club’s first ever Lifesaving Olympics, which was a great end to the year.  Thanks to Fiona Haslett for organising the event.  The beach sessions were well attended throughout and enjoyed by all.  Our newly qualified assistant teachers did a brilliant job of delivering Rookie sessions, and are keen to start teaching in September.  Our Award of Merit group passed their Bronze Cross assessment in June, and 3 new Beach Lifeguards qualified through the club in July thanks to trainer Wayne Cotterill volunteering to run a course for the club.  Another successfully renewed their qualification.  Donna Robson delivered life support training for members of Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, which has led to 14 members of the Brigade being awarded the RLSS Life Support 3 award.

We will be celebrating the year’s achievements at our Presentation Evening on 5th October at the Berkley Tavern in Whitley Bay.

We are also pleased to announce four new members to the committee:

The club operates an “opt out” policy for photographs.  Photographs may be taken at the pool, beach or during dry sessions and may be used to recognise achievement or to promote the club on the website.  Any parents of junior members who would not like their child’s photograph to be taken and/or used for club promotion should contact Julie.

Survive and Save

The current lifesaving awards (Bronze Medallion, Award of Merit and Distinction) will no longer be available as of 31st December 2012.  These will be replaced by the new Survive and Save awards, which progress from Bronze level to Gold.  At each level there is a core module, followed by four more specialist strands: Medallion, Beach, Stillwater and Sport.  The club will give members the opportunity to complete all four strands, with classes at all three levels following the teaching programme below:
