Drowning Prevention Week 2014

NSVL are proud supporters of Drowning Prevention Week, which was launched by the Royal Life Saving Society UK in 2012 to promote water safety and reduce incidences of drowning. This year, the official Drowning Prevention Week runs from 21 to 29 June 2014.

Accidental drowning causes more than 400 UK deaths every year, is the third highest cause of death in children and claims the lives of at least 360,000 people worldwide each year.

Drowning Prevention Week will see schools, leisure centres, organisations, businesses and lifesaving clubs across the country holding activities to help raise awareness of how to be safe in, on or around water.

NSVL will host visits from 2 Scout groups through the week, providing water safety advice, demonstrating basic lifesaving skills and what to do if a friend is in trouble in the water.

If someone is in difficulty in water:

•Shout for help and ensure the emergency services are on their way (call 999 or 112)

•Without endangering yourself, see if you can reach out to them, extend your reach with a stick, pole, item of clothing, lie down or stay secure.

•Throw something buoyant to them such as a ring buoy, part filled plastic container, ball or anything that will float.

•Keep your eye on them all the time and shout reassurance urging them to use their arms and legs to bring themselves to safety

Please share this message with friends, family and colleagues - you never know whose life it could save.  If you would like a water safety talk at your school or organisation, or simply more advice on staying safe near water, email This email address is being protected from spambots.
