Last Swim of the Prom, Boxing Day 2014

As ever, NSVL celebrated the end of the year by running into the North Sea from their base in Whitley Bay.  This year's swim was the last to be hosted from our current base on Central Lower Promenade due to planned renovation works starting next year, so swimmers donned t-shirts quoting "Last swim of the prom" to mark the occasion.

110 swimmers braved the chilly 6°C water, which was a drop from last year's 7.4°C.  Swimmers warmed up with some star jumps before launching into a run to the water, some ran out just as quickly while others enjoyed body surfing in the small waves for up to 15 minutes.

As a registered charity, the club relies on volunteers and fundraising to continue to deliver its lifesaving work, and the Boxing Day Swim is vital in raising funds for the club.  This year, money raised through sponsorship, donations and a raffle will go towards setting up a new club beach base in 2015, an exciting opportunity for all club members.

As always the swim could not go ahead without the hard work of committee members and helpers to organise the event, and volunteers on the day to ensure all runs smoothly. Thanks and well done must go to all involved for coordinating a safe and successful swim. We are also grateful to Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and Red Seal Rescue who provided additional safety cover on the day.

We look forward to welcoming old and new faces each year and are already thinking ahead to next year's event, location to be confirmed!  Thank you to all of our kind supporters, we wish you a happy new year and all the best for 2015.
