Boxing Day 2015

The annual NSVL Boxing Day swim took place for the first time from our new beach base on Tynemouth Longsands and ‘House Warming’ t-shirts were worn in honour of the occasion. The dip was attended by 100 swimmers, who braved the chilly and rougher than normal seas better known for surfing than swimming and it showed!
Swimmers warmed up with some star jumps and running on the spot before launching into the water for up to 15 minutes. Even some spectators were caught out by the larger waves and went for a smaller ‘dip’ of their own.
As a registered charity, the club relies on volunteers and fundraising to continue to deliver its lifesaving work, and the Boxing Day Swim is vital in raising funds for the club.  This year, money raised through sponsorship and donations will go towards improving the new club beach base on Tynemouth Longsands in 2016, an exciting opportunity for all club members.  Sponsorship can be handed in via cash or cheque at any pool session in January, alternatively contact This email address is being protected from spambots. NSVL welcomed dippers from all walks of life to this year’s Boxing Day swim. One in particular was Lorna Mallett from Northallerton, a former resident of Whitley Bay who turned 50 this year. Lorna is completing 50 challenges, the Boxing Day swim being one of them, to celebrate the successful completion of her breast cancer treatment and wanted to dip her big fluffy pink bra into the North Sea to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Care.  Dipping with her were her husband Phil and her two daughters Elizabeth and Kirsty.
As always the swim could not go ahead without the hard work of committee members and helpers who organised the event, and volunteers on the day to ensure all ran smoothly. Thanks and well done must go to all involved for coordinating a safe and successful swim, especially the club’s Beach Lifeguards. We are also grateful to Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade who provided additional safety cover on the day.
We wish you a Happy New Year and all the best for 2016. Thank you to all of our kind supporters and we look forward to welcoming old and new faces when pool training sessions resume next year.
