13 new Rookie Instructors

On Saturday 2nd November NSVL ran a Rookie Instructor course for our volunteers.  13 of our instructors attended the course, which was led by Malcolm Dunn and organised by Paula Richardson.

Malcolm started the day by asking the group to think about how many qualifications or awards they held.  We worked out that between the 13 candidates there were 95 awards, including Pool and Beach Lifeguard, First Aid at Work, Assistant Instructor and Survive and Save.  It was brilliant to realise how much our volunteers have achieved as a result of their hard work and commitment to the club.  We then thought about why our Rookies come to NSVL and why we as volunteers continue to lifeguard and teach at sessions week in, week out.  Responses included 'you get a sense of achievement when a child learns something new or does something they couldn't do before'.  Others said 'it's a sense of responsibility that we don't get in other areas of our life' and 'we're treated like adults by the older and more experienced teachers'.

We continued to discuss what makes 'good' teaching and how this maps onto the Rookie Lifeguard programme.   We also looked at the resources provided for Rookie Instructors by RLSS UK and how we could use the schemes of work and sessions plans to help us organise our lessons.  The highlight for many candidates was being given their blue and yellow Instructor pack!

Our teachers do a fantastic job and we believe it is important to provide training and support to make sure our Rookies can come along, learn new things and enjoy sessions each week.  If you are interested in volunteering with NSVL visit the volunteering page for more information or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
