The new boathouse ramp
The new boathouse ramp
Work has been ongoing for over a year now to improve our facilities at the beach, and it is now nearing completion.

Now that the work on the promenade at Whitley Bay has been completed, we have access to our boathouse again.  With its new ramp and brickwork it was about time the insides were spruced up, so Hannah, Chris and Geoff spent a dusty hour on Sunday scraping all the flaking paint (probably dating from the 1950s) off the walls ready for it to be given a new bright white coat of paint to improve the lighting in there.

Meanwhile James and Grahame continued their work replacing the window frames and windows of the main base so that hopefully the base will be free from draughts and a little bit warmer even in the harshest of north-easterly winds.  With the windows properly sealed, a dehumidifier has been mounted in the main kitchen/changing area.  The dehumidifiers already in place in the office and training room remove anything up to 10 litres of water a day between them, so a dehumidifier in the wettest part of the base should have a tremendous effect on making the base feel warmer and drier.

Joe has also been busy replacing both the male and female showers and shower trays.  The old showers had served us for 8 years, but were starting to wear out and only had two temperatures: freezing or scalding.  The new showers maintain a comfortable temperature for showering after a cold session in the sea.

We also have new comfortable chairs courtesy of the Premier Travel Inn on Newcastle Quayside, along with a some nice thick carpets to be laid in the training rooms.

All of these improvements should mean that our beach base remains habitable until (hopefully) we can build our own new facilities.
