Read on for more details.
The last pool session at Whitley Bay Leisure Pool will be on Easter Sunday,
8th April. This will be our free Easter fun session and will be our fond
farewell to Whitley Bay Leisure Pool, which has served NSVL well since the
club's formation in 1998. We would like to invite as many members from past and
present, along with parents and family to join in the fun.
This will also be the last time our sessions are held on a Sunday evening.
From SATURDAY 21st April, our pool session will move to our new time
of 5.30-7.30pm at Tynemouth Pool. (Please note there will be no taught sessions
on the weekend of 14th/15th April, though NSVL staff will be expected to attend
an induction - read
more.)
A number of options were considered to retain our Sunday session, but
Tynemouth Pool was only available on a shared basis after 6.30pm and
Killingworth's new pool was deemed to be too far to travel for the majority of
our members based in the Whitley Bay/Tynemouth area.
We believe that apart from the change in day (Saturday nights from
5.30pm-6.30pm for Rookies and 6.30-7.30pm for youth/adults), this offers the
least disruption to our members, and in fact provides an exciting opportunity
for us all.
The move to Tynemouth means we have much
more water space, and crucially much more deep water which is essential for
lifesaving. This will allow the club a great deal more breathing space compared
to the current cramped conditions at Whitley
Bay. The move will
also give us appropriate water space for training some of our young lifesavers
up to competition standards, and we already have plans to send a team to the
National Speed Championships in 2008.
Adult members will also be able to enjoy the increased space and deeper
water, and we hope this will encourage more of you to come along to the pool
session, whether for lifeguard training, fitness or swimming.
The weekly pool entry charge will stay at £2.00...the same price as it was
at the start of NSVL in 1998 and less than a standard adult swim at the
pool. NSVL will be paying increased pool hire charges, so it is important
that as many members as possible come along to the sessions so we can continue
to offer this excellent value for money. (Lifeguards, teachers,
assistants and other helpers during the Rookies session will continue to
receive free entry to the adult pool session.)
We apologise for the inconvenience the change in day will cause for some
members, but the new day and time is the best option available to us and in
fact it offers us an incredible opportunity to take the club in exciting new
directions. This is a long term change and it is not planned to return to
Whitley Bay when it reopens, so we hope that
everyone will continue to support the club into our tenth anniversary year.
Throughout April, beach sessions will be running on both Saturdays and
Sundays for a Beach Lifeguard Course. After this, it is likely the main
beach session will move to a Saturday, in line with our pool session.
However access to the beach facilities should still be available on Sundays
where requested.
Induction Session
On Saturday 14th April there will be an induction session from 5.30pm at
Tynemouth Pool.
It is imperative that all NSVL Teachers, Assistants, Lifeguards and other
personnel attend this session as it will be your chance to get your bearings
and be inducted at Tynemouth Pool before our sessions start there the week
after.
Lifeguards and NRASTAC holders will be tested on their ability to dive to
the bottom of the pool which at 3.84m is deeper than the diving pool at Whitley Bay.
