Information for parents about Rookies sessions and activities.

General Information

  • Sessions run every week (except over Christmas and New Year, or where otherwise informed). All sessions are listed in the 'Upcoming' panel at the top of each page of this web site.
  • Please ensure you arrive ready to start at the specified time.
  • All teachers give their time for free. The £2 entry covers pool hire, with any surplus used to buy equipment etc.
  • Badges are awarded on the basis of the teacher’s continuous assessment of skills.

Attendance

  • It is important that your child attends sessions regularly in order to progress through the awards system.
  • Where children will be absent due to holidays or other activities, please inform us in advance.
  • You will lose your place if your child misses four weeks consecutively without notification
  • Children who attend regularly are guaranteed a place for as long as they wish to stay.
  • A waiting list is in place for all new Rookies. Please fill out a Waiting List form as early as possible if you have younger children so that they will be able to join Rookies as soon as they turn 6.

Additional Activities

  • In the summer months, the Rookies have an additional weekly training session at the beach to learn about water safety, practice resuscitation skills and go in the sea. All beach sessions are free of charge.
  • Occasionally, Rookies may get the chance to attend competitions. Attendance is not compulsory, but is a fun experience and a chance to meet other Rookies.
  • Rookies may also get the chance to support the club in other ways, such as fundraising activities.
  • A number of social activities are organised for parents and Rookies. Details will be posted on this site and on the notice boards. If you have any ideas for social events, please see Maureen at the stall.

Swimwear, clothing and hygiene

  • Appropriate swimwear must be worn when attending Rookies sessions
    - For boys this means swimming trunks or shorts
    - For girls this means a one-piece swimming costume (bikini style costumes are not suitable)
  • Rookies also need to bring a t-shirt to wear in the pool (along with anything else requested by the teacher)
  • All Rookies will be issued with a swimming cap on enrolment. For safety and hygiene reasons it is advised that swimming caps are worn at all times and long hair must always be properly tied back.
  • Goggles may be worn, however parents must ensure they are properly adjusted before the lesson starts
  • For safety reasons jewellery and watches should not be worn during Rookies
  • Please keep the spectator area and changing rooms tidy by placing all rubbish in the bins provided.
  • Please ensure shoes are clean as you enter the building. Outdoor shoes must not be worn in the changing rooms.

Child Protection

The club fully supports the Child Protection Policy of the Royal Life Saving Society and all trainers and helpers are subject to the appropriate police checks. A copy of the policy document is available for inspection upon request.
